 Indigenous and Western Science Observations on Climate Change: Resources for Teachers

Purpose:  Promoting the active participation of Alaska Native students in the atmospheric, Earth, and ocean sciences and increasing the perceived relevance of the Geosciences among the population as a whole

 

Logistics:

 

Institute Overall Schedule:

 

For those in the UAA Dorm, the ASD school bus will arrive at 7:10 A.M. Wednesday May 27 at your dorm and will depart at 7:15 A.M.

 

The bus arrives at the front door of Dimond H.S. at 7:35 A.M.  On the first day go to the “A” Commons area to pick up your packet.

 

The Institute’s first formal activity begins at 8:00 AM at Dimond H.S.  To kick off the ASD Academy, we will all gather at the auditorium to hear Dr. Broken Leg.  From there we will go back to the “A” Commons area where we will begin our content/activity work.

 

Lunch will be at the Dimond cafeteria each day at 11:25 A.M.

 

The first day, we will leave Dimond High School at approximately 1:00 P.M. for a field trip to Portage Glacier, including a trip on the ferry to the face of the glacier. We plan to have the group back to Dimond H.S. by about 5:00 P.M. for those that have left their car there. From there, the bus will take everyone back to UAA.

 

The second day, the bus will depart UAA the same time as the first day.  We will have another field trip.  We will leave Dimond at 4:15 P.M. and drive to Polaris K-12 School where we will see a frost tube.  We will depart Polaris at 5:35 P.M. and go to the Campbell Creek Science Center for and informal dinner and a short, guided hike around the facility.

 

On the 3rd day & 4th days, May 29th & 30th, we will have regular days at Dimond.  The bus will leave UAA at 7:15 A.M. and depart Dimond at 4:15 P.M.

 

Attire:

 

Casual clothing is expected.  Please bring good walking shoes and layers of clothing including a raincoat and hat.  We never know what the weather will be the last week of May. 

 

Expectations of Participants:

 

Mandatory attendance

Completion of assigned work during and after the institute

University credit course information will be given to each participant during the institute.

 

Remember your laptop!

 

Please bring a laptop computer that can connect to wireless Internet.

 

For those with Travel Stipends:

 

Please bring your airline receipt so that we can reimburse you in a timely manner – we cannot reimburse without your receipt.

Driving Directions to Campus Housing

 

From Airport:

- Exit the airport onto W. International Airport Road.

- Go east on Intn'l Airport Road to the exit for Minnesota Drive.

- Take exit for northbound Minnesota Drive, towards Downtown

- At first stoplight, turn right onto Tudor Road

- Go approximately 3.5 miles on Tudor Road, then

- Turn left onto Elmore Road (stoplight just before pedestrian bridge).

- Look for UAA Housing signs, and turn left onto Sharon Gagnon Lane.

 

From Downtown:

- Take Gambell Street (becomes New Seward Highway) south, approximately 2.5 miles.

- Take ramp for Tudor Road, turn left (east) and go approx 1.8 miles.

- Turn left onto Elmore Road (stoplight just before pedestrian bridge).

- Look for UAA Housing signs, and turn left onto Sharon Gagnon Lane.

You will be getting an email from Tina Veldcamp at UAA with the details of where to go upon arriving on campus.

 

If you are not renting a car, please take a cab to the UAA dorms.  Rental cars and cab fares are on your own and are not reimbursable.

 

You will be receiving a per diem.

Other Travelers:

 

If you did NOT receive a travel stipend, but you want to stay with the group on campus you can fill out the UAA Summer Guest Housing Form and pay on your own.  The cost is $45 per night for a private room with a shared bathroom.  The form is attached and is also available on the institute wiki ( http://asdn.pbworks.com/Teachers-with-a-Credit-Stipend-Only ) or on UAA’s website.

Last thoughts:

 

We want this institute to be a great learning experience and that it will be enjoyable.  One of the exciting things is that we will get to meet professionals from all over Alaska—both teachers and scientists.
